Roof Cleaning FAQs

What are those black streaks on my roof?
It is a hardy type of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma that feeds on the crushed limestone used in asphalt shingles. Rain spreads the algae down the roof causing the black streaks. It is estimated that 50% of roofs are replaced simply because they look old or unsightly. Some estimates have also suggest that as many as 50% of roof replacements were not even needed, and could have been cleaned instead.

Although these streaks do not mean you need to replace your roof, algae will cause it to rapidly deteriorate and fail long before it should. In addition, moss absorbs and holds water and lifts shingles over time. This can cause water and ice infiltration and become extremely destructive to your roof and home.
